Mṛga Hastāḥ (Abhinayam for the Animals)
Transliteration
Dakṣiṇe siṃhāvaktrakaḥ syāt tatpṛṣṭhe vāmahastataḥ |
Patākahastamāsritya calat-praviralāṅgulim ||
Sliṣṭhasiṃhamukhaḥ so ‘ayam siṃhārthe viniyujyate |
Meaning
Dakṣiṇe siṃhāvaktrakaḥ syāt tatpṛṣṭhe vāmahastataḥ = Right hand assuming simhamukha hasta, left hand assuming Patāka hasta is placed on the back of the right hand, Patākahastamāsritya calat- praviralāṅgulim = Fingers of the Patāka hasta being apart and wavy; Sliṣṭhasiṃhamukhaḥ so ‘ayam siṃhārthe viniyujyate = This is Simbumukha hata and denotes the lion.
Right hand assuming simhamukha hasta, left hand assuming Patāka hasta is placed on the back of the right hand; the fingers of the Patāka hasta being apart and wavy. This is Simhamukha hasta and denotes the lion.

Ardhacandro-adhomukhaḥ cet vyāghrārthe samprayujyate ||
Meaning
Ardhacandro-adhomukhaḥ cet vyāghrārthe samprayujyate = Ardhacandra hasta facing downwards, denotes tiger.

Pūrvokta matsya haste tu dakṣiṇaḥ kuñcitaḥ calaḥ |
Asyāṅgulyaḥ pravīralāḥ pañcasaṅkhyā yathākramama ||

Pūrvokta matsya haste tu dakṣiṇaḥ kuñcitaḥ calaḥ = When the right hand as Matsya hasta is held downwards and shaken; Yujyate stabdharomārthe saṅkīrṇamakaraḥ karaḥ = with the five fingers held apart as bristles; Asyāṅgulyaḥ pravīralāḥ pañcasaṅkhyā yathākramama = it is Saṅkīrṇamakara hasta and denotes the boar.
When the right hand as Matsya hasta, is held downwards with the five fingers apart, and shaken to denote bristles, it is Saṅkīrṇamakara hasta and denotes the boar

Nāmnā-adhomuṣṭi mukulaḥ kaperārthe nirūpyate
Meaning
Pūrvokta muṣṭi hastastu madhyamāṅguṣṭha yogataḥ = If the middle finger and the thumb of Muṣṭi hasta are joined. Nāmnā-adhomuṣṭi mukulaḥ kaperārthe nirūpyate = then it is Adhomuṣṭi mukula hasta and it denotes the monkey.
If the middle finger and the thumb of Muṣṭi hasta are joined, then it is Adhomuṣṭi mukula hasta and it denotes the monkey.

Bhallūkārthe prayojyaḥ syāt padmakośaḥ patākakaḥ ||
Meaning
Vāmahaste padmakośo-adhomukhatvā-mupāśritaḥ = When the left hand, as Padmakośa hasta, faces downwards, Dakṣiṇe tu patākākhyastasya pṛṣṭhatalāśritaḥ = and right hand, as patāka hasta, is placed on the back of the left hand, Bhallūkārthe prayojyaḥ syāt padmakośaḥ patākakaḥ = it indicates the bear.
When the left hand, as Padmakośa hasta, faces downwards and right hand, as patāka hasta, is placed on the back of the left hand it indicates the bear.

Nāmnā-ayamandhamukulo mārjāre samprayuyate.
Meaning
Pūrvokta muṣṭi hastaryānāmikāṅguṣṭha yogataḥ = In muṣṭi hasta, if the thumb and the ring finger are joined, Nāmnā-ayamandhamukulo mārjāre samprayuyate = it is Ardhamukula hasta and it denotes the cat.

Vāme muṣṭiḥ dakṣiṇe vā maṇibandhena miśritā = When left hand with muṣṭi hasta joins the wrist of the right hand with mudrā hasta, Mudrikā – adhomukha muṣṭmudrā hasto-ayamīritaḥ = and held facing down wards, then it is Muṣṭmudrā hasta, Muṣṭmudrākara scāpi camaryāma samprayujyate = and it denotes the yak.
When left hand with muṣṭi hasta joins the wrist of the right hand with mudrā hasta, and held facing down wards, then it is Muṣṭimudrā hasta and it denotes the yak.

Nāmnā tālapatāko-ayam godhāyām pūjito bhavet |
Meaning
Ūrdhvau kaniṣṭhikāṅguṣṭhau patāke kiñcidīritau = If the thumb and the little finger of Patāka hasta are slightly raised, Nāmā tālapatāko-ayam godhāyām pūjito bhavet = it is is Tālpatāka hasta and when bent it denotes godha.

Pūrvokta mṛgaśīraṣya tarjanayūrdhva prasāritā = If the forefinger of Mṛgaśīrṣa hasta is raised, Nāmnā candramṛgo hastaḥ śalyārthe samprayujyate = then it is Candramṛga hasta and denotes the porcupine deer.

Meaning

Pūrvoditāñjali karc cānguṣṭhau kuñcitau yutau = If the thumbs of Anjali hasta are bent; Prasāritāvurdhvabhāge calitau cāpyadhomukhau = it is Khaḍañjali hasta, Nāmnā khaḍañjali – rāyamuṣṭrārthe samprayujyate = it is Khaḍañjali hasta, it denotes the camel.
If the thumbs of Anjali hasta are bent, and moved up and down, it is Khaḍañjali hasta, it denotes the camel.

Talasiṃha karaḥ so’ayama-ṛṣbhārthe niyujyate = it is Talasimha hasta, it denotes the bull.
