Jalajantu hastāḥ (Abhinayam for the Aquatic Animals)

Transliteration

Cakrāṅguṣṭhau ca tarjanyau hastyoḥ aṃtaramgatau |

Mādhyame miśrite dirghe kuñcite ca-apyanāmike ||

Prasārite kaniṣṭhe ca śliṣṭacakro-ayamiṣyate |

Etasya vinyogastu bhekārthe samprayujyate ||

 

Meaning

Cakrāṅguṣṭhau ca tarjanyau hastyoḥ aṃtaramgatau = If the thumbs and the forefingers of cakrahasta are bent into the palm; Mādhyame miśrite dirghe kuñcite ca-apyanāmike = the middle fingers and ring fingers are together and closed ; Prasārite kaniṣṭhe ca śliṣṭacakro-ayamiṣyate = and when the little fingers are extended it is called as śliṣṭacakra hasta; Etasya viniyogastu bhekārthe samprayujyate = it denotes the frog.

If the thumbs and the forefingers of cakrahasta are bent into the palm, the middle fingers are bent and the little fingers are extended it is known as śliṣṭacakra hasta, it denotes the frog.

Transliteration:

Dakṣiṇaḥ karkaṭo bhūyāt apāveṣṭitarūpakaḥ |

Vāmahastoparisthāyī śliṣṭāścasyāṅguliḥ kramāt ||

Līnakarkāṭakaḥ so ayaṃ kulīre samprayujyate |

 

Meaning

Dakṣiṇaḥ karkaṭo bhūyāt apāveṣṭitarūpakaḥ = If right hand holding Karkata hasta performs apaveṣṭita hasta prāṇa;Vāmahastoparisthāyī  śliṣṭāścasyāṅguliḥ kramāt = and is placed on the left hand and the fingers are interlocked; Līnakarkāṭakaḥ so ayaṃ kulīre samprayujyate = it is considered as Līnakarkaṭa hasta. It denotes the crab.

If right hand holding Karkata hasta performs apaveṣṭita hasta prāṇa and is placed on the left hand and the fingers are interlocked, it is considered as Līnakarkaṭa hasta. It denotes the crab.

Transliteration

Raktapāyini sūcīsyāt recitā tiryageva ca ||

 

Meaning

Raktapāyini sūcīsyāt recitā tiryageva ca = When sūci hasta performs recita hasta prāṇa and moved obliquely, it denotes the leech.

When sūcī hasta performs rescita hasta prāṇa and moved obliquely, it denotes the leech.

Transliteration

Patākasvastiko hasto militaśca visarjitaḥ |

Nakārthe peṭikārthe ca yojitaḥ pūrvasūribhiḥ ||

 

Meaning

Patākasvastiko hasto militaśca visarjitaḥ = When two Patāka hastas are crossed and hold apart; Nakārthe peṭikārthe ca yojitaḥ pūrvasūribhiḥ = is considered by the seers as a crocodile, as well as a box

When two Patāka hastas are crossed and held apart, it is considered by the seers as a crocodile, as well as a box.

Dakṣiṇaḥ kartaribhūtaḥ kara – ūrdhvamukho yadi |

Asyaprakosthe vāmaḥ syāt kaṭakamukha rūpataḥ ||

Kartaridaṇḍahasto-ayam ḍuṇḍubhārthe prayujyate |

 

Meaning

Dakṣiṇaḥ kartaribhūtaḥ kara – ūrdhvamukho yadi = If the right hand holding Kartari hasta faces upwards and left hand holding Kaṭakamukha hasta is placed on the fore; Asyaprakosthe vāmaḥ syāt kaṭakamukha rūpataḥ = arm of the right hand, Kartaridaṇḍahasto – ayam ḍuṇḍubhārthe prayujyate = it is considered as Kartaridanḍa hasta, it denotes Dundubha.

If the right hand holding Kartari hasta faces upwards and left hand holding Kaṭakamukha hasta is placed on the fore-arm of the right hand, it is considered as Kartaridanḍa hasta, it denotes Dundubha.

Tarjanī madhyame cāgre cāpavadvakrite yute ||

Anāmikāṅguṣṭha – sandhau vakritā supratiṣṭhitā |

Kaniṣṭha vakritā cāyaṃ vyālī vyālyām niyujyate ||

 

Meaning

Tarjanī madhyame cāgre cāpavadvakrite yute = If the forefinger and the middle finger are bent like a bow, Anāmikāṅguṣṭha – sandhau vakritā supratiṣṭhitā = the ring finger is placed at the base of the thumb, Kaniṣṭha vakritā cāyaṃ vyālī vyālyām niyujyate = and the little finger is bent, it is known as Vyāli hasta; it denotes vyāli.

If the forefinger and the middle finger are bent like a bow, the ring finger is placed at the base of the thumb, and the little finger is bent, it is known as Vyāli hasta, it denotes vyāli.
